A lovely handmade dried flower wreath

As I’d mentioned in my Previous post I spent a lot of my time during the summer months cutting flowers from the garden and hanging them to dry. Today I decided to finally gather them together and make a lovely autumnal wreath. I really love how it turned out!

The key flowers and greenery that I used for this wreath are;

  • Heather

  • Roses

  • Peony

  • Strawflower

  • Eucalyptus

  • Fern

  • Laurel leaves

For the base I used a straw wreath, they are quite inexpensive and very easy to work with. The method that I followed was to first of all create lots of mini poses by tying several stems together with string. I then hand tied the poses to the wreath. I found this easier than adding them to the wreath base stem by stem.

I was surprised at how quickly this came together. All in all it took about 40mins. A word of warning though, it’s a messy business! It looked like a flower bomb had gone off on my work surface.

I love how the colours work together but are subtle and muted. I haven’t hung this on my outer door as I’m worried that the elements would cause it to absorb the moisture from the air and the flowers could go rotten. Instead I’ve hung it on the wall in my hallway, so its the first thing that you see as you walk through the door.

I really enjoyed the whole process. Growing and nurturing the flowers, hanging or pressing them to dry, planning the colour scheme and creating this beautiful wreath. I will keep this one in situ until the Christmas wreath is ready to make an appearance.
